Sustainable Energy

Click on one of the topics below to learn more about the science, technology and benefits of these different forms of renewable energy:

Green energy includes conservation, renewables and clean distributed energy supported by micro grids and storage.

Renewable energy technologies play a significant role in creating a sustainable electricity system and reducing the harmful effects of electricity generation on our natural environment and our climate.

Biomass can be harnessed in many ways to create heat and electricity.  One of the great benefits of energy from biomass is that most technologies make use of waste products.  Digesters can process manure and sewage to generate electricity.  Landfill gases can also be harnessed to produce energy.

Harnessing the wind has become the fastest growing generation technology in the world.  Ranging from 300 watt (W) to 5 megawatt (MW) wind turbines have a significant role to play in local community developments of renewable energy.

Energy harnessed from the sun has a variety of uses, both domestic and commercial.  The advantage of solar power is that it is a stand alone system which can avoid the expensive costs of transmission system upgrades or building new transmission and distribution lines.

With over 200 instalations of hydroelectric generators in Ontario.  There is a renewed interest in developing small-scale hydro dams as it is far less environmentally harmful then the large-scale dams.  New technology and design is also minimizing the negative impacts once created by hydroelectric developments.
