ecoPerth
| details: |
ecoPerth, winners of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities Sustainable Community Award, built an Energy
Service Company (ESCO) that works with the municipality, businesses and institutions to design and implement
energy efficient retrofits. With their Solar Hot Water Systems Programme they hope to install up to 700 Solar
Hot Water Heaters within the next three years, using incentives, utility bill payment options and other innovative
techniques. Because of Perth's South-West orientation, almost 80% of homes have good potential for this system.
ESCO worked with the town to design and implement energy efficient retrofits in all municipal facilities. Improvements
to efficiency of heating, lighting and climate control were financed with the savings in energy consumption.
The town undertook almost $400,000 in additional work, mostly by local contractors, and will realize savings of
between $40,000 and $50,000 annually.

| projects: | ecoPerth has over 20 different environmental programs on the go through four
different teams: Buildings, Green, Transportation and Communications. Programs include solar hot water bulk purchasing,
municipal energy efficiency retrofits, soap bubble insulation for greenhouses, pesticide free campaign, a bicycle salvage
program, and more.
ecoPerth is in the planning stages of a microhydro electricity generation project. The project would coincide with the upgrade
of an existing set of weirs over which the Tay River flows as it winds through downtown Perth. This project will depend on funding
becoming available for the upgrades of the existing structures.
